Getting Windows 7 to play nice with OS X file servers

I’ve heard of a lot of people running into this issue so I figured I’d post up the fix. I ran into this myself today. I’m testing out Windows 7 and some of the servers I connect to on a daily basis are OS X fileservers. Prior to the upgrade I wasn’t having any trouble and since the servers and my workstation are both pulling from active directory so there’s no doubt that my user name and password are identical on both ends. When I would try to connect to a share I would just be continually prompted for my username and password which it would tell me was incorrect. Well it turns out there is a fix and it’s really easy to to do, just follow the directions below on your Windows 7 machine.

1. Go to the Start Menu
2. Search for: security
3. Click on Local Security Policy
4. Goto Local Policies> Security Options
5. Double Click on Network security: LAN Manager Authentication
6. Change level to: Send LM & LTLM Responses

A good reason not to buy an iPhone

I’m gonna start right off by saying I have an iPhone, and I love it. I’ve had smart phones for years now and I can say without a doubt that the iPhone has been a game changing breakthrough.

Now I also have a T-mobile G1 and though it took me longer to get used to I honestly prefer it over my iPhone. I saw a great article on lifehacker that really sums up my dislikes of the iphone.

Apple just rejected the Google Voice iPhone application from App Store distribution, the most recent in a long line of questionable moves, and the message is clear: If you want a device that won’t lock you out of innovation, skip the iPhone.

I believe this is what you call “Thinking Different”?

The iPhone is a full-on computer in your pocket, and in many ways is more capable than your regular old PC. Imagine, if you can, that Microsoft tried dictating what browser you had to use on Windows. Oh right, that happened. Except they didn’t refuse to allow you to use any other browser just because it duplicated the features of their default browser. And as Wired points out, Apple is inviting all kinds of regulation with this kind of mindset. And it hasn’t just been about Google Voice:

Using Google Voice

Initial Thoughts

I’ve been waiting for this for quite some time now. Google Voice was originally a call routing service called Grand Central which Google acquired a couple years ago. It basically allows you to route all of your various phone numbers (cell, home, work, work cell, etc.) through a single phone number. That’s really the tip of the iceberg though.

Long story short I was signed up for a beta invite way back in the Grand Central days and that carried into Google Voice. So you can imagine my joy when I got in a few weeks back. I absolutely love it so far and from the sounds of it invites are going out fairly quickly nowadays (less then 1 week). So if this sounds like something you’d be interested in I highly suggest giving it a try, it’s free so there’s nothing to lose really. You can sign up here -> Google Voice

At it’s heart it’s best to think of Google Voice as a call routing service, you get your new phone number that you picked out and that number routes calls to all of your phones. The cool part about this is your phone number never has to change again you can just give out your Google Voice number and you can switch cell phone providers without transferring your cell number, change land lines, change work phones and you never need to give out a new number again.
